Daily Devotional: Psalms 108:6-9
Ps 108:6-9
6 Save us and help us with your right hand that those you love may be delivered. 7 God has spoken from his sanctuary: “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my scepter. 9 Moab is my washbasin, upon Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
Eph 3:17b-21
17b And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
Have you ever wondered what you might be able to accomplish for the Lord or how he might be able to use you in some bold way? When we yield to him and to his will, there are no limits as to what God can do with us and through us.
The apostle Paul did not accomplish all he did in his life by his own power. It was by the power of the Holy Spirit in him and his life that he was able to do the things he did. In fact, when he returned to Antioch (the church that had sent him and Barnabas out on their preaching trip) it says he reported all the things the Lord had done through them. So he later wrote that he could do all things through Christ who gave him his strength.
In the passage above we are told that God will give us his power through the Holy Spirit to do more than we can ask or imagine. But one of the things about God that seems to us a contradiction is that we must yield our strength to God for him to empower us with his might. This is why Jesus taught that the proud will be humbled before God but the humble will be exalted. The only limit placed on my potential service to God is my inability (or unwillingness) to submit to him and to be used by him. He controls all things in his wisdom and in his time.
Heavenly Father, giver of life and creator of all things, I know you rule in majesty and power with a wisdom that is far beyond what I can understand. Your power is unlimited and all things are under your control. Thank you for your great love that is also beyond my ability to grasp. Give me the wisdom to see how I can be used in your service and help me open my heart to your Spirit that I may become all you want me to be and do what you would have me do. Keep me from making excuses or being lazy in your service. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
