Daily Devotional: Psalms 109:21-26
Ps 109:21-26
21 But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. 23 I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. 24 My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt. 25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. 26 Help me, O LORD my God; save me in accordance with your love.
1 Peter 4:10-11
10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
There is an old hymn by Thomas Chisholm entitled “O To Be Like Thee” that has these words: Oh! to be like Thee, full of compassion, Loving, forgiving, tender and kind, Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting, Seeking the wand’ring sinner to find. Oh! to be like Thee, lowly in spirit, Holy and harmless, patient and brave; Meekly enduring cruel reproaches, Willing to suffer, others to save.
Our goal in life should be to be like our Savior in heart, in attitude and in every action of our lives. With this disposition we will always bring honor to our God and thus lead others to him. God is love. Jesus demonstrated his love for all of mankind when he humbled himself, came to earth and then gave his life for our redemption. But it was not just his love that brought him here to be our Savior. It was also his desire to do the will of the Father in heaven.
As we endure reproaches for the name of Christ or we suffer for doing what is right, we bring honor to God. When we stand for truth when it opposes the norm or is not politically correct (and we do it in a loving spirit) we show forth Jesus in our hearts and our lives. This brings honor to God. When we forgive others who have done us wrong – especially when they don’t ask for it or even admit they have done it – we show forth the love of God and honor his holy name.
O Lord God, I do want to be like Jesus in all things. I know my heart and my life is not always aligned with your will as his was because I tend to be selfish. Please forgive me and help me rid myself of self. Help me to truly consider others better than myself and in humility look to do all I can to help others serve you. Thank you for all you have given me in this life and give me a sharing heart so I will use all I have and all I am to your glory. Bless those who are taking cancer treatments and others diseases. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
