Daily Devotional: Psalms 114:1-8

Ps 114:1-8

1 When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue, 2 Judah became God's sanctuary, Israel his dominion. 3 The sea looked and fled, the Jordan turned back; 4 the mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. 5 Why was it, O sea, that you fled, O Jordan, that you turned back, 6 you mountains, that you skipped like rams, you hills, like lambs? 7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, 8 who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water.

Eph 2:19-22

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

God took one small family in a foreign country and made of them a great nation of people to be his own. In doing this, he showed his mighty power by the plagues brought on Egypt, by parting the waters of the Red Sea and destroying their armies. When they arrived as his holy nation to the land he had promised, he opened the Jordan for them to cross over on dry land. We are told that the hearts of the people of Canaan melted with fear. They knew he was really God.

So today, God has taken us from the slavery of sin and Satan to transport us to a new relationship with him in Jesus Christ. We are now the people of God, his own special nation, Spiritual Israel. From our sinful past he has used us to build his own spiritual house in which he dwells by his Spirit. We are also described as the body of Christ. In him we grow up together as each of us in love supplies the part that is needed for the body to become whole. We have gone from being nothing in this world to being the children of God. As his family, we live according to his will so that we bring glory and honor to his name.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful to be your child and to be able to serve you. Give me greater faith to trust you in all things and to let my light shine before others so you will be glorified. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. As I consider all you did for physical Israel and then all you have done for me in Jesus Christ, I stand in awe at your power and your majesty. It is with reverent fear and trembling that I come before you but with assurance in the blood of Jesus my Savior. Give me wisdom to share your word with others and to lead someone to you. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
