Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:65-72
Ps 119:65-72 Teth
65 Do good to your servant according to your word, O LORD. 66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands. 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word. 68 You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees. 69 Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart. 70 Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law. 71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. 72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
1 Peter 1:5-7
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
In this psalm we see the love that David had for the word of God, his law, his precepts and his commands. It was in the heart of David to please God and do his will in every way. It was not a chore to study and learn God’s word. It was not a thing he had to make himself do but he delighted in learning it. How could this bring so much pleasure to him (and to us today)?
It was because David realized that the more he knew the word of God, the more he knew God. It was by constant study that he came to be so close to God. In the process of knowing God, he also learned to trust him in all things. When he was a lad watching sheep, he trusted God to protect him and his sheep. When he fought in battles against the enemies of Israel, he trusted God to win the battles for him. When he was fleeing from Saul or later his own son, both of whom sought to kill him, he still put his trust in God to defend him and protect him.
As we come to better know God, we have the same assurance that as his children we are under his constant surveillance and care. There is no part of our lives that God does not see our needs and provide them. We can trust God in all things.
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful to you that you are faithful and can be trusted to always keep your word. I see your mighty power in creation all around me and I know you can handle anything that comes up in my life. I see beauty and holiness of your nature revealed in your word and as I measure myself against this, I know I fall short in so many ways. Please continue to forgive me and help me become more like you every day. Give me a greater desire to know you and your word and wisdom to apply it in my life. Please be with those who are sick and those who are hurting and use me to help them. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
