Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:89-96

Ps 119:89-96           Lamedh

89 Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. 90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. 91 Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. 92 If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. 93 I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. 94 Save me, for I am yours; I have sought out your precepts. 95 The wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will ponder your statutes. 96 To all perfection I see a limit; but your commands are boundless.

Matt 5:17-18

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”

God speaks from his eternal nature and what he says is always truth. Therefore, his word is forever and can never be false. The problem we have is that we don’t always understand or interpret it properly. Just as when we speak, some of what God has said was directed to a particular person or in a particular situation. That does not mean that it applies to us today. One such example of this is that he told Noah to build and ark. Obviously, he does not expect us to do this.

God gave laws to Israel as his special people. Since Moses was the one he used to give this law, it is referred to as “the Law of Moses” on many occasions. This law and it commands were for that nation until the Messiah would come and the law would be fulfilled. Jesus came and the Law was accomplished in his birth, his life, his death and his resurrection. Thus, today we are not under that Law.

We are under the law of Christ which is also called the law of liberty and the new covenant. God has not changed but since his nation of people today is a spiritual nation and not a physical nation, his law has changed. The writer of Hebrews says we have a better covenant with better promises and a better priesthood. Our desire is to love and respect the word of God and to live it in our lives.

O Lord my God, I am in awe at your power, your greatness, your wisdom and your love for me. As I ponder the reality of that home you have promised, I realize that being in your presence and seeing your Son face to face will be the greatest thing my mind can imagine. I know I cannot comprehend your majesty and glory in its fullness. I can only imagine being given a glorified body to be like you. Help me keep my eyes focused on you, on Jesus and on the things above so I will be more determined to live for you. Use me in your will. I pray in Jesus name.
