Daily Devotional: Psalms 128:1-6

Ps 128:1-6

1 Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways. 2 You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. 3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. 4 Thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. 5 May the LORD bless you from Zion all the days of your life; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem, 6 and may you live to see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel.

Matt 6:24-25, 33-34

24 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Many hours have been spent and volumes written about the meaning of life. How many times have each of us said (or thought) that there must be more to life than just the day to day routines that we live. We get up, we eat, go to work, come home, eat, sleep and repeat it day after day. The wise man of old said that the sun rises, it set and then does it again. It rains and the water goes to the sea and then it rains again. He concluded that all of this (life on earth) is vanity and like chasing after the wind. But then he injected God into the equation and suddenly meaning and purpose appeared. We are here for God and not ourselves.

His conclusion was to “fear God and keep his commandments – this is the whole purpose of man.” He then adds that we will all give an account to God. Compare this to the words of Jesus when he said the greatest commandment of God is to “love the Lord God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind.” When we walk in the ways of the Lord, he will bless us now and prepare us for our eternal future with him.  In Jesus we can have life and have it abundantly.

O Lord my God, I am so thankful for your great wisdom that provides me with a purpose for living beyond the physical world that surrounds me. Help me keep my eyes on Jesus and on the things above and not love this world or the things of this world. Help me put you first in every part of my life so I will be what you want me to be and do what you want me to do. Forgive me when I fail. Help me rejoice in the Lord always and never forget your blessings and your grace extended to me in so many ways. Use me in your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
