Daily Devotional: Psalms 131:1-3

Ps 131:1-3

1 My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. 2 But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. 3 O Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.

Rom 15:5, 13

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

There are some people who live by the slogan: “what? me worry?” The problem with this is that they just don’t care what happens to them or others around them. It is based on the humanistic philosophy which denies the existence of God who loves them and who cares about them. While we, as his children, are told not to worry, it is not because we don’t care. Our peace of mind is based on the fact that he cares, he sees and he is in control and on our faith in him.

A few years ago while on vacation, I tried scuba diving. I thought this would be a “piece of cake” because I love the water and I had been swimming on top of and under the water for most of my life. The air was available but I could not make myself breathe under the water. There was nothing wrong with the air tanks or the mask I was wearing. The problem was me and my inability to accept that I was not going to drown if I breathed the air that was available in my mask.

Too often this is how it is in our lives. We believe in God, his care and his power but when it comes time to turn loose and let him be in control, we just somehow feel that we cannot do it. The response that Jesus gave to this problem was “O you of little faith.” As Paul said about sin that crops up at times; it is not because we don’t want to live right but we just have a hard time making it work all the time. We can have the peace of God when we truly trust him and breathe his air.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful that you care about me and have promised to be with me. Increase my faith so I can turn all of my cares over to you and I can let you have complete control of my life. Give me wisdom to see your way and to know your will and empower me to become all you want me to become. Give me a greater focus on you, your Son and on heaven above. Help me know how to serve others as I serve you. I ask your mercy on all those who are in pain and are struggling to serve you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
