Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:8-14
Ps 135:8-14
8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, the firstborn of men and animals. 9 He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. 10 He struck down many nations and killed mighty kings--11 Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan and all the kings of Canaan--12 and he gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to his people Israel. 13 Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, through all generations. 14 For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.
1 Peter 1:3-5
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
We can only imagine the impact it would have on our lives to have been one of the Israelites who witnessed the plagues sent on Egypt or to have seen their army drown in the sea. Think about being at the mountain when God appeared amidst the smoke and thunder and the impression this must have made on those who were present. What an awesome deed for God to actually take over the land of Canaan and give it to his people to inherit. This is the God we serve today.
But our inheritance is much greater than anything they received. Our deliverance is from worse bondage and our freedom is more abundant. We have received centuries of testimony from those who saw firsthand the mighty power of God at work in miracles, signs and all kinds of wonders. Our faith in God today is based on hearing his word and this evidence. This is the God we serve today.
But are we any more faithful and grateful for what God has done for us than those of Israel were in their day? We serve God under a better covenant based on a better law with better promises. God has given us his Spirit to live in us and to help us be all he would have us become. By his power we can become partakers of the divine nature as his special people. This is the God we serve today.
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for all you have done for me and continue to do for me every day. Thank you for providing a way that I can be saved from sin and have the promise of eternal life. Thank you for making me your child and always watching over me as I live each day. Thank you for the opportunity of talking with you and being able to throw all my burdens on you. I need your continued help, your wisdom and your forgiveness as I go through life. Use me to be what you want me to be and to do your will. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
