Daily Devotional: Psalms 144:5-10
Ps 144:5-10
5 Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down; touch the mountains, so that they smoke. 6 Send forth lightning and scatter the enemies; shoot your arrows and rout them. 7 Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners 8 whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful. 9 I will sing a new song to you, O God; on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you, 10 to the one who gives victory to kings, who delivers his servant David from the deadly sword.
James 5:13
13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.
No matter where we are in life, God is there with us. It is easy for us to pray when things are going badly, when we are faced with temptation or when life has come down on us from all sides but do we remember to sing and praise God when all is well and when we have won a victory? Paul says we are to let all of our requests be made known to God with thanksgiving.
Jesus met ten men who were lepers and told them to go to the priests and offer the sacrifices for healing. On the way to the priest they were healed but only one of them returned to thank the Lord. He asked this man if there were not ten who had been healed and where were the other nine? I am afraid that our (my) odds of thanksgiving about fit this story: 1 out of 10 for our (my) many blessings!
There is no greater way to give thanks than in song. While at the same time we are being thankful we also sing praises to our Lord. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! Jesus is all the world to me, my life my joy my all. O how I love Jesus because he first loved me. Thank you Lord for loving me, thank you Lord for saving me. My God is so big, so strong and so mighty there’s nothing my God cannot do! I need thee every hour most precious Lord.
How better to offer thanksgiving, praise our God and teach others (including our children) than in singing songs to our Lord? No wonder Paul said we are to teach and encourage each other as we sing and make melody to the Lord.
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your wonderful love shown to me in more ways that I can possibly know. Thank you for allowing me to be born into a family who loves you and who taught me and encouraged me to serve you. Thank you for allowing me to be born in this great country and for the freedoms I have been able to enjoy all of my life. Help me not squander these blessings but see and use them as opportunities to reach others with your gospel. Please be with those who suffer and are persecuted and continue to serve you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
