Daily Devotional: Psalms 147:7-11

Ps 147:7-11

7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp. 8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. 9 He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call. 10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; 11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

Matt 6:25-27

25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

These latter words of Jesus are sandwiched between the statements that we cannot serve two masters and we must seek first the things of God and his way of righteousness. When we try to serve both God and material things, one of them will get top priority – but not both. Jesus said if we are going to trust God to take care of us and all of our needs, we must put him first in our lives.

One of the reasons given most often in the Bible for us to trust God is that he is the one who created us and all we both see and know. He even takes care of the animals that roam in the wild. He clothes the grass with flowers. He supplies the earth with food. Since he takes care of the sloth, the ants, the deer and the eagles, how can we not believe that he both can and will take care of us?

As one studies the different animals and the special abilities of each, it becomes impossible to not see that they are the result of intelligent design. In fact, almost every area of technology is an effort to simulate some part of what is seen as nature in animals or some part of the human anatomy. The ultimate computer is one that can function the way God made our brains work naturally.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for your provisions, for your love and your constant care in my life. Thank you for giving me the ability to work and the opportunities to do so to be able to earn a living and to be able to share with others. Thank you for the wonderful people you have given me as family and friends. Give me the strength and self-control to put you first in all things. Help me know your will and put it into practice in all I say and all I do. The more I see and know your majesty and your glory, the more I realize just how far short I fall in being like you. Forgive me when I fail and help me draw closer to you. I pray in Jesus name.
