Daily Devotional: Psalms 5:7-12

Ps 5:7-12

7 But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house; in reverence will I bow down toward your holy temple. 8 Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies--make straight your way before me. 9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with destruction. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they speak deceit. 10 Declare them guilty, O God! Let their intrigues be their downfall. Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against you. 11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them that those who love your name may rejoice in you. 12 For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

Rom 15:5-6, 13

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

As I think back over my life and how I have reached the point where I am now in my thinking and my understanding of God’s word, I have to attribute much of it to so many others and their teaching. While there are some that stand out in things and at certain times, most of what I believe is a combination of all I have heard, read and studied from many different people measured by the word of God.

This Psalm is in many ways a plea for God to judge those who reject him and who are his enemies. While that was for physical Israel at the time it was written, the same applies today as there are so many who oppose God and who reject his Son, Jesus Christ as the Messiah and Savior. At the heart of this Psalm is that God is the final judge and he will destroy his enemies and save his own.

So as we follow Christ today, each of us must love one another and seek to dwell together in unity so that with one mouth we will glorify God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

Heavenly Father, I am thankful for your love shown to me in Jesus Christ. I am not perfect and I have failed you in so many ways but in my heart I want to live for you and be yours. I ask you to be patient with me and continue to mold me and make me all you would have me to become. I know that I am selfish and stubborn at times and I ask you to take these away from me and help me open my heart to your bidding and the work of your Spirit in me. Fill me with your love so that it is evident to all who come in contact with me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
