Daily Devotional: Psalms 10:1-11
Ps 10:1-11
1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."
2 Peter 3:3-4
3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."
There are those (and the number seems to be growing) who scoff at the promises of God and the warnings given in his word. Since the day in the Garden of Eden when Satan told Eve that the forbidden fruit would not cause her to die but would make her wise as God, people have been deceived into thinking that God does not really mean what he says. Peter goes on to tell us that God’s promises are sure, the end will come with judgment and furthermore the evidence of God is abundant and to be missed it must be done so willingly. The righteous will inherit eternal life and the wicked will go into everlasting punishment. God will avenge his people and all that they have faced at the hands of their enemies. Meanwhile, God is with us and will give us his wisdom, his strength and his protection.
Lord God, help me never doubt your word or give up on your promises. As I study the Bible I see so many who were faithful and received their reward while others gave in to sin. Help me learn from the many examples (both good and bad) to trust you more and to conform my life to your will in all things. Increase my zeal to teach others and to lead them in your way, both by my words and by the example of my life. Use me to help others who are less fortunate in so many ways and keep me from being selfish. I pray in the name of Jesus.
