Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:19-24
Ps 31:19-24
19 How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you. 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues. 21 Praise be to the LORD, for he showed his wonderful love to me when I was in a besieged city. 22 In my alarm I said, "I am cut off from your sight!" Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. 23 Love the LORD, all his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.
Rom 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
When we commit our hearts and our lives to Jesus, we have all the power of the godhead in our lives. God is on our side and wants only what is best for us. He will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear, but with every temptation will provide a way of escape. Jesus, who is at the side of the Father, has already been faced with and has overcome every kind of trail we can face in life, so he knows and understands our situation. He intercedes with the Father on our behalf. The Spirit intercedes for us, and at the same time he empowers us to do the will of God while giving us the wisdom to know how to overcome.
But it is so easy for us to think that these promises are the end of what God is doing for us. It is in these trials and in overcoming our temptations that he is making us ready to be with him in eternity. Life is not about living here and now. Life is about getting ready to be with God. While death is the greatest tool of the devil, Jesus has destroyed both the fear of death and the power of death. For the believer death is just a transition from this world to the world of glory, in the very presence of God. Faith in Jesus is the victory that overcomes the world.
Lord God, holy and reverend is your name in all the earth. Your wisdom is beyond finding out and your power beyond explanation. Your glory fills the earth and is seen in every part of your creation. I thank you for your love that provides me a way of salvation, an escape from the penalty of my sin. Help me make a new commitment each day to live for you and to devote that day to your glory. Use me in your will and for the good of others. Give me a heart and a life of love, mercy and compassion. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Savior and Lord.
