Daily Devotional: Psalms 55:1-8
Ps 55:1-8
1 Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; 2 hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught 3 at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger. 4 My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me. 5 Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me. 6 I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest--7 I would flee far away and stay in the desert; Selah 8 I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."
1 Peter 5:6-7
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
When we face trials beyond our ability to bear, when the world crashes in all around us and over us, we seem to have nowhere to go and no one to whom we can turn, but God is always present. Not only is he here, but he is waiting with outstretched hand to lead us to better times. Jesus reminded us that we should not worry because God sees every sparrow that falls to the ground. He feeds and clothes each of them and he cares more for us than the birds.
Paul says that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all we ask or think, through his power that is working in us. In the previous verses, he explains that this power is the Spirit that lives in us. There is nothing that is so big that God cannot handle it. There is nothing beyond his ability to understand and to see the solution. We serve an infinite God, who knows all and controls all.
The only thing that can limit God is our lives. Because of his nature, we must trust him and serve him for him to bless us. But serving him means we allow him to tell us how to live. He dictates the way we worship him. He determines what is right and wrong. Trusting him means we do things his way, even when it doesn’t make sense to us and we cannot see why or know how it will work. This is the faith that caused Abraham to offer his son Isaac. This is the faith that moved Noah to build an ark to save his family and this is the faith that will save us today.
Lord God, heavenly Father and creator of all things, you are majestic in all the earth and none is like you. The more I see your absolute purity, your infinite wisdom and your endless love, the more I realize how much I fall short of your glory. I need your cleansing every day. Thank you for making this possible and a reality for me through the blood of Jesus. Increase my faith, give me wisdom and a pure heart and empower me to have self-control to more fully do your will. Give your blessings to those who are grieving. I pray in the name of Jesus.
