Daily Devotional: Psalms 58:1-11

Ps 58:1-11

1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge uprightly among men? 2 No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth. 3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward and speak lies. 4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears, 5 that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be. 6 Break the teeth in their mouths, O God; tear out, O LORD, the fangs of the lions! 7 Let them vanish like water that flows away; when they draw the bow, let their arrows be blunted. 8 Like a slug melting away as it moves along, like a stillborn child, may they not see the sun. 9 Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns--whether they be green or dry--the wicked will be swept away. 10 The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked. 11 Then men will say, "Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth."

Gal 1:3-5

3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

It is hard for us to imagine the role that David played for God. He was a ruler over a world empire that actually respected and served God by faith. When God spoke, he obeyed. As a man (king) after God’s own heart, he gave credit to God for his victories because he depended on God for his battles. He trusted God when he could not understand why or how and praised him no matter what he faced. So, when he was opposed by other nations or individuals, it was considered as an assault on God, his people and his glory rather than a personal attack.

The more we align ourselves with the will of God, the more we will be able to see God working in us and through us. The more we trust him, the more we will be like him in our hearts and our actions. We will not be perfect (David was not) and we will not have all troubles removed from our lives (his were not), but we will have the peace and joy of God in our hearts and the promise of an eternal home.

Lord God, I thank you for your love and care for me in this life. Thank you for your Holy Spirit who has been given to mold me into your likeness. Help me have more faith to open my heart to his bidding to allow your will to be my own. Often life is not fair in my eyes, but I know you care about me and even in my trials you are working on me and in me, so I better do your will and better serve others. It is so easy for me to become proud and think my accomplishment are my own so help me remember that I am only what you make me. When I fall short of your glory, forgive me and strengthen me in your wisdom. I pray in the name of Jesus.
