Daily Devotional: Psalms 61:1-8

Ps 61:1-8

1 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. 2 From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3 For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. 4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah 5 For you have heard my vows, O God; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. 6 Increase the days of the king's life, his years for many generations. 7 May he be enthroned in God's presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him. 8 Then will I ever sing praise to your name and fulfill my vows day after day.

Jude 24-25

24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy- 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

In reading the early life of King David, we are impressed with two things. David was taken from the field as a young shepherd boy to eventually become king over Israel. His entire life was built on his trust in God and his heart which was set on making the will of God his own. Everything David did, every decision he made and every place he went, he sought the will and approval of God. While running for his life from Saul, he never was aggressive in trying to fight back. For several years he ran rather than fight. Even when given opportunities to kill Saul, he refused to do so or allow his men to do so because Saul was the anointed of the Lord. He simply said that God would take care of Saul in his way and in his time.

The other thing that becomes obvious is the working of God. From the time Saul was rejected as king, God had chosen David to succeed him and was working to bring it about. If we had been there, we would not have understood many of the things that happened, or ways God used in the process, but he was in control.

This is not really different from today. We are saved by grace through faith. God did the work to make it possible for us to be saved and we accept his grace when by faith we obey his gospel and live by faith in him and for him.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your grace. Increase my faith. Help me, as David, to always make your will my own. Give me faith to face and overcome the giants of temptation and the many enemies that would war against my soul. But even as David still sinned and needed your forgiveness, I also need it every day. Help me not get discouraged but use me to encourage others. Give your healing and peace to those who are sick and taking treatments. I pray in the name of Jesus.
