Daily Devotional: Psalms 62:7-12
Ps 62:7-12
7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah 9 Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie; if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. 10 Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11 One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, 12 and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.
2 Thess 2:16-17
16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
How do we wrap our minds around the idea of a God who is so powerful that he can just speak and by his word create into existence that which did not exist? He does not make or reshape something from what already is. When we add to this the wisdom to make all things that we know as our universe and beyond so that it all works together in harmony, we cannot grasp such power coupled with infinite wisdom. This is the God we serve. This God of majesty – reverend is his name!
But God is holy and totally separated from sin. His very nature requires that sin be punished with death – both physical death and spiritual death. Every time we fail to live up to his glory, we sin. Thus, we are all deserving of eternal punishment; not because of the sin of our forefathers but because we have sinned against the God who made us. To change this is beyond the scope of possibility for us.
But because of his great love, God has used his power and his wisdom to make it possible for us (you and me) to live with him. Not just to live with him as we are now, but in new glorified bodies that will never wear out, get sick, have pain or ever suffer sorrow and that will never die. He sent his Son to earth, to live as one of us but without sin. He then gave that perfect life as the punishment for our sin by his death on the cross so that we can live with him in eternity.
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful that you love me. Thank you for giving your Son to die for my sin. I really cannot understand this kind of great love or the grace you have shown in doing this. Give me faith to trust you in all things and to try to be perfectly obedient in every part of my life. In my weakness, I do fail at times and the more I know you and your will, the more I realize just how much I fail to be like you. I need your Spirit to help me have the wisdom, the strength and the self-control to overcome each temptation. I humbly pray in Jesus name.
