Daily Devotional: Psalms 69:19-29

Ps 69:19-29

19 You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. 20 Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. 21 They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. 22 May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. 23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. 24 Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. 25 May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. 26 For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. 27 Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. 28 May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. 29 I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me.

Mark 15:34-37

34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"-which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah." 36 one man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said. 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

In the depths of agony, Jesus requested water to drink and they gave him vinegar instead. When it seems that things have reached their worst in our lives, things go down from there and we find no relief. We may think that God doesn’t care or he has turned his back on us. He will not forsake us in our time of trial or need.

God turned his back on Jesus and forsook him because all our sin had been placed upon him and he was made sin for us. Although he knew no sin in his own life, he accepted the guilt of your sin and mine upon himself and died alone in our place so that we can be made righteous before God in him. Because of what Jesus did, we have the assurance that in him we are never alone. He is our advocate before the Father and our brother by our side. We are safe in the arms of Jesus.

O Lord God, giver of life and creator of all things, I am so thankful that I can serve you and know that you have forgiven me in Jesus Christ. When I face trials in this life, give me faith to trust you. Give me wisdom to use each hardship I face to make me stronger and better equipped to help others in their afflictions. Fill me with your Spirit as he molds me from within into your likeness. Instill in me a pure heart that is filled with compassion for others. Help me know your peace and joy, even in the middle of a corrupt world. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
