Daily Devotional: Psalms 71:1-8

Ps 71:1-8

1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. 2 Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. 4 Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men. 5 For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD, my confidence since my youth. 6 From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother's womb. I will ever praise you. 7 I have become like a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge. 8 My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long.

2 Tim 1:2-5

2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

The one person in the world who probably gave the most encouragement to the great apostle Paul was a young man named Timothy. This was a person Paul could send on any mission because he shared the same faith and love for souls that Paul had shown in his life. He shared the same desire to be a good example for others and to help others know Christ. We have no idea how much good for Christ this young man was able to accomplish in his life. Where did he get such great faith?

His faith was the result of the teaching of his mother and his grandmother. There is not greater opportunity for good than that of being a godly mother and later a grandmother. Much of this faith is taught by example but it should be by teaching the word of God also. There is no way to measure the amount of good that has been done through the ages by these godly women as they teach and encourage their young ones to become leaders in the Lord’s church.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for my mother and my grandmothers who loved me and loved their other children enough to teach us about Jesus. Thank you for the example of faith, love and godliness they left each of us. Help me live up to the teaching I have been given and to emulate the faith of those who have been before me. I ask your blessings on the many young people today and help those of us who are older to do our part to teach them and leave them a good example of faithfulness to follow. Give me wisdom to understand your word and strength to put it into practice in my life. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior.
