Daily Devotional: Psalms 97:1-6
Ps. 97:1-6
1 The LORD reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. 2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3 Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. 4 His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory.
Col. 1:9-10
9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
As we read and study the Psalms, it is so easy to be filled with awe and wonder as we consider the great power of God, his majesty and wonderful love for all of his creation. Praise the Lord for he is good! He made us and we are his!
Since he is God and he made us, we are subject to him. We like to proclaim that Jesus is Lord but if he is Lord, then by definition, he commands and we obey. We know that God has brought us into Jesus Christ by his grace and we don’t earn our salvation but it is because of this grace that we not only are to be obedient to his word but we seek to conform to his will for us in all things. We are not to see how much we can be like the world around us but how much we can be like God.
One of the wonderful things about serving God according to his will is that it will bring us joy and peace. This is not a joy that is just external but one that remains, even in the face of adversity. We can have inner peace even when our whole world is filled with turmoil, sickness or tragedy because he who is in us is greater than the world around us. Paul says that the Spirit in us is able to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all we can ask or even think! “If God is for us, who can be against us?” “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
Heavenly Father I thank you for loving me and allowing me to be your child. Thank you for being willing to forgive me, even when I have caused you to give your Son to die in my place. Help me be honest with myself and with you, to admit my sin when I see it and to turn from it and live for you. Keep my lips that they will only say things that will honor you. Increase my faith and my love for you so that I will have no reason to ever doubt you and will submit to your will in gladness. Be with those who are suffering and give them your peace. Give your strength to all who seek to serve you, especially in difficult circumstances. I pray in Jesus name.
