Ps 107:1-9
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this--those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, 3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. 4 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. 5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. 6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 7 He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. 8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, 9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
John 13:1
1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
This was a bitter sweet night for our Lord. He knew he was about to leave this world where he had participated in every aspect of humanity. He would be free from the ridicule and persecution he had and was about to endure. He would be reunited with the Father to regain the glories of heaven. Yet, he also knew that he was about to suffer and die for sin by accepting the guilt of our sin on himself.
He was leaving those whom he loved. Leaving them to suffer for their faith. They would be mistreated as he had been. They would suffer as he was about to do and some of them would die for proclaiming his name. So in both word and by his actions, he was showing them how much he loved them and God loved them.
The problem was that they did not understand what was happening. They were still looking for an earthly kingdom and arguing about who would be in the highest positions. They had no idea that they were about to be carrying out a mission that would change the world from that day forward. They did not know the love of God. Love that knew no bounds and would save them from hell. Love that would change their whole attitude and perspective of how to deal with and treat other people. A love shown in mercy, compassion and forgiveness.
Heavenly Father it is such a privilege to be loved by you. Thank you for Jesus who died for my sin and not mine only, but for the sin of all who would come to him. I am so thankful for your love that takes care of my physical needs also. Thank you for your Spirit who works in all of your children to remake us in your image. Help me open my heart to be used by you in your way and in your time. Fill me with your love so I will share the gospel with others and do all I can to encourage those who are serving you. Continue to forgive me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
