Daily Devotional: Psalms 109:16-21
Ps 109:16-21
16 For he never thought of doing a kindness but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. 17 He loved to pronounce a curse--may it come on him; he found no pleasure in blessing--may it be far from him. 18 He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil. 19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him. 20 May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me. 21 But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.
1 Tim 4:1-3
1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
Some people are bad, wicked and just plain evil. In our politically correct society we want to say they are sick or just make excuses for them. In the Old Testament there were those who offered their children to the idol gods as burnt offerings and they were condemned by God as wicked and an abomination. Some engaged in every kind of sexual immorality and they were destroyed for being evil. When some seemed to be “good” people but forgot God and his laws, he punished them for their sins. Sin is sin and it does not matter where or when. Sin is sin.
But what is sin? Sin is any violation of the nature or the will of God. God is the standard of right and wrong. His judgment is always right. He actions are always moral. His ways are guided only by love and purity. So Paul declared that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Any time we fail to live up to his glory, we have sinned. Our goal is to be like God and his perfect Son, Jesus Christ.
But the most wonderful news that has ever been declared is that because of the love of God, his marvelous grace has been made available to all who will accept it in Jesus Christ. We are to put our trust in God and accept the death burial and the resurrection of Jesus on our behalf. As we are buried with Christ in baptism, our sinful person dies and we are raised a new person, forgiven and free from sin.
Heavenly Father it is such wonderful news to be told that I have my sins forgiven in Jesus Christ. I realize it is not my own doing and I have nothing to brag about on my own. I also know that you have saved me to do the things you identify as good and to love and show compassion. Help me be like you as my faith is increased and my heart is tuned to yours. As I study your word, give me wisdom to apply it in my life. Be with those who have lost the ones they love and give them the hope and peace that only you can give. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior.
