Daily Devotional: Psalms 116:7-14
Ps 116:7-14
7 Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you. 8 For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, 9 that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living. 10 I believed; therefore I said, "I am greatly afflicted." 11 And in my dismay I said, "All men are liars." 12 How can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me? 13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. 14 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.
Matt 10:37-39
37 "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
I have heard two different sports celebrities say that God is first in their lives and family comes second. Both of them were known at one time as being the best in the world in their positions but the more one learned about them, the more evident it became that God was more important to them than winning or being known for their accomplishment. Both made huge sums of money but that was not their priority either. In their accomplishments, they gave God the glory.
It is easy for us to say that we put God first, family next and then other things come next in our priorities. When our lives are examined, does one see that in action? I heard someone say that money was not important to him but everything he did and every decision he made was based on how it would impact his money or ability to make money. We say God is first, but is he really?
The psalmist loved the Lord and recognized that God loved him, took care of and protected him in all things. In return for this, his goal was to please the Lord by doing his will, by calling on his name and honoring him with his life. He was not ashamed of the Lord as his God and praised him in the presence of others. We must be willing to acknowledge Jesus as our Lord by our lives.
O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your love for me. Thank you for providing for me and blessing me beyond anything I deserve or even dreamed possible. Keep me from ever being ashamed of you, of Jesus or doing what is right and help me honor you by all my actions in life. You alone are God so what you say is truth so your standards of right and wrong are forever right. I am weak at times and I get discouraged at times so I need the power of your Spirit in my life all the time. Increase my faith and embolden my love for what is right. Bless those who are taking treatments for various diseases. I pray in Jesus name.
