Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:57-64
Ps 119:57-64 Heth
57 You are my portion, O LORD; I have promised to obey your words. 58 I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. 59 I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. 60 I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. 61 Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. 62 At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws. 63 I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts. 64 The earth is filled with your love, O LORD; teach me your decrees.
Col 3:7-10
7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
When we become a Christian, we are to become a new person in Christ. We are said to have been born again. Our citizenship changes from the kingdom of Satan to the kingdom of the dear Son of God. We are said to be adopted into the family of God. We walk in newness of life as we put off the old person and put on the new in every part of our lives. Our disposition changes because we no longer seek to please ourselves but our goal is to please our Father.
As when getting married, we have entered into a new relationship with God and we have made a covenant that is never to be broken. Jesus said that each time we partake of the Lord’s Supper we are reminded of the covenant that is sealed with his blood. This is a promise we have made to God that we will live for him as we get rid of all sin and fill our lives with good works. We rid ourselves of hatred and malice and fill our hearts with love, compassion, kindness and forgiveness.
Every word we utter is designed to honor our Savior and glorify his name. We give up lying, even those small white lies, and speak the truth in love. We are careful to speak only what will build up and not things that hurt or tear down others.
Heavenly Father help me keep my tongue so it will speak only that which is good and wholesome, appropriate for the moment to encourage others and honor you. Use me to show others Jesus in the way I live. Help me open my heart to your Spirit so I will demonstrate his fruit in my life. I need you every hour to remind me and give me strength to do what I know is right. Help me not put off doing good that I can do today. I ask your comfort on those who are hurting. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
