Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:65-72
Ps 119:65-72 Teth
65 Do good to your servant according to your word, O LORD. 66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands. 67 Before I was afflicted, I went astray, but now I obey your word. 68 You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees. 69 Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart. 70 Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law. 71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. 72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
Col 3:2-6
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to the flesh: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
What is really important to you? Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver but the Psalmist says the word of God is more precious to him than thousands of pieces of silver. Do we betray our Lord for the piddly and vanishing things of this world? Do we put more importance on money and material things than we do on the things of God? Are sports and our children’s extra activities more precious to us than serving our Lord? Does our job, our business or our career become an idol to us because it is put ahead of Jesus in our lives? What is precious to me (to us)?
The more determined we are to serve God, the more we realize how much we fail to be all he wants us to become. The greater our understanding of his majesty, his glory, his power and his wisdom, the more we realize just how sinful we have been and still are at times. We all fall short of the glory of God and that is sin.
When Christ is our life, his word is precious to us. Our goal is to become like him in every way. As we allow the Spirit to work in us and to bring forth his fruit in us, we still fail but we see growth. As our attitude becomes more like Jesus, we realize our weakness but rejoice in his forgiveness. Christ in us is priceless.
Heavenly Father I am so glad that you have forgiven me for all the things I have done in my life. I still fail and I still need your constant forgiveness. Although I am far from your glory, it is a blessing to be able to allow you to be reflected in me and in my actions. Help me remember that when I have done all you ask of me; I am still just a lowly servant and it is for your glory I seek to do what is right. Use me to help others and to encourage them to live for you. Give your comfort and peace to those who have lost ones they love. I pray in the name of Jesus.
