Daily Devotional: Psalms 121:1-8

Ps 121:1-8

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills--where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip--he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD watches over you--the LORD is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all harm--he will watch over your life; 8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Rom 5:6-8

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

For us as humans to think of the love that God has for us should make us stop and realize that he only wants what is best for us. As parents we have to make decisions that our children don’t understand and often don’t like but we know what is best so we do it anyway. On an infinitely higher scale, God knows what is best for us in every situation. He knows what our lives are capable of being and that is what he wants for each of us. In addition to this, he has promised to take anything that comes in our lives and use it for our good – if we love him.

God is not trying to hold us back or keep us from having fun. He has told us to rejoice in the Lord always. When Jesus began his ministry, he began with how we can be blessed or happy. The problem with what he taught us is that none of it really makes sense to our earthly minds. We have to trust him, his wisdom and his instructions for us. Following him brings us joy, peace and true happiness.

In Jesus we can get up every morning with a clear conscience and know that our day will be bright. We may face problems but he will be with us because he never sleeps nor slumbers. We may face things that hurt but he gives healing and brings peace into our hearts. As we face difficult decisions, he has promised to give us the wisdom we need. We may be mistreated but he gives us the ability to love.

O Lord God, heavenly Father and creator of all, I am so thankful for your wisdom and the ways you have expressed your love to me. Increase my faith so I will be more devoted to you, to your will and to being like you. I need your wisdom every day to make the right choices and your strength to carry them out. Thank you for the many freedoms I enjoy in this country and I ask that you preserve these for my children and grandchildren. Give your wisdom to our leaders and convict them with your Spirit so they will trust you as God. I pray in the name of Jesus.
