Daily Devotional: Psalms 139:1-6

Ps 139:1-6

1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Rom 11:32-36

32 For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all. 33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" 35 "Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?" 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

For the child of God seeking to do the will of the Father there is nothing that is more comforting than knowing that God see our every action and knows the very thoughts of our heart. While God can never excuse sin, in his mercy he continues to forgive our weakness and the sin that results. Were we to try to hide or run from God it would be to no avail. When Joseph was being carried to Egypt, or when sold as a slave to Potipher or while in prison for a crime he did not commit, God saw him and was with him every moment. He will never forsake us.

On the other hand, there is nothing that should be more terrifying for the one who is ignoring God or who is opposing him in their lives. When Jonah tried to run and hide, he never left the presence of God. When some of the Jewish leaders talked among themselves about Jesus, it says he knew their thoughts. When the disciples argued who would be the greatest in the kingdom, Jesus knew.

When we stand strong in faith or when we fail in doubt and weakness, God knows not only what we have done but he also knows why. We demonstrate our trust in God by the lives we live more than what we say. God already knows what is going to bother us before we realize it does. So why not turn it over to him now?

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your all-seeing eye. It is a constant comfort to know that you are with me in every situation in life. Knowing this also helps me stay away from sin and leads me closer to you. Open my eyes to see the opportunities you give me to do your will and to do good for others with what you have given me. I need you every hour to guide me, lead me and to use me in your service. As we begin to approach elections in our country, I ask for your guidance and control for the outcome. I pray in the name of Jesus.
