Daily Devotional: Psalms 146:1-5
Ps 146:1-5
1 Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul. 2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. 3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. 5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, …
John 12:35-36
35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
Trust is a big word, filled with huge implications. We have heard someone say they would trust another with their life or would trust them with everything they own. This means they know that other person would only act in their best interest and do only what would be good for them. There is no greater compliment or praise that can be given than to implicitly trust someone in this way.
We trust our lives to the doctor who does surgery on us or to some degree when we take the medication he or she prescribes. We put our trust in the pharmacist to fill the prescription correctly. We trust the airline pilot to fly the plane to our destination safely (or as I did recently, trusted a cab driver in NY city!). So trust is not a new or unknown concept to us. We put our lives in the hands of others.
But these kinds of trusts are not always deserved. I once had a prescription filled with a wrong medication that could have had disastrous results had I not caught it in time. Planes crash, cabs wreck and doctors make mistakes.
God deserves our trust. He has never made a mistake or had a misunderstanding about what is best for us. He made us and has given us his word to guide us. Jesus even came and proved it was best by living it without sin. Nothing gives praise and honor to God more than when we trust him and seek to obey him.
Heavenly Father you are trustworthy in all things because you are all wise, all knowing and you cannot lie. Increase my faith to trust you and your word for me in every part of my life. Fill me with your Spirit so I will have your wisdom to see each temptation to sin and every opportunity to do good. Give me your strength to overcome the temptation and to use the opportunity to honor you by doing the good. Forgive me when I fail. Be with our nation and bless those who seek to guide us closer to you but stop those who would lead us away from your will. Give us leaders who respect and trust you. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
