Daily Devotional: Psalms 6:6-10

Ps 6:6-10

6 I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. 7 My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes. 8 Away from me, all you who do evil, for the LORD has heard my weeping. 9 The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. 10 All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed; they will turn back in sudden disgrace.

Matt 5:6-9

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

Often in our schools, those who seem to be identified as “nerds” are the brunt of jokes and are laughed at. However, in a tech world, it seems that these same kids are the ones who become the CEO or who make the most money. As one looks over old high school yearbooks, it is obvious that those voted most likely to succeed or the most beautiful don’t end up that way. Things are often not what they seem and the road ahead of all of us is full of surprises.

When we seek to serve God and put him first in our lives, we may be the brunt of jokes and we may not fit in with the “in” crowd. It is not because of living right but we also may never go on to lead some great corporation or become wealthy. In fact, doing what is right, being honest and caring about others wellbeing may actually help us get ahead in this world. Success in this world is not a measure of our devotion to God nor is it a measure of how pleasing we are to him.

When we put God first in our lives, we will have an inner peace that will give us an outer joy that cannot be taken away by our circumstances. This doesn’t mean we go around laughing all the time but it does mean we have a joy that is deep within us that is based on our relationship with Jesus and his promises. This gives us the ability to forgive all who do us wrong. It gives us the ability to show compassion and to put the interest of others ahead of our own. We seek to be like Jesus.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus and the love both of you have shown for me in more ways than I can count or even know. I humbly come before you, the creator of all things, giving you praise for all good things in my life. I also thank you for the many trials I have faced that have helped me grow closer to you and have built my faith. I need your grace every day to be stronger in my faith and in my love. Thank you for the beauty of your creation. Be with all who are teaching your word in truth. I pray in the name of Jesus.
