Daily Devotional: Psalms 10:13-18
Ps 10:13-18
13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
Matt 5:6-10
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus once told a story of a man whose servant owed him a huge sum of money, so much that he could not repay it in his lifetime. The man had mercy on his servant and forgave his debt. After being shown this mercy, he went out and found a fellow slave who owed him about a day’s wages. He demanded payment but the man could not pay. He had the fellow servant thrown in prison until he could repay the debt. The first man was shown mercy but had none on others.
We are all fellow servants of God and we owe him far more than we can ever repay. He has extended his grace because of his mercy on us. His forgiveness is offered to all who will come to him in faith. As our heavenly father is merciful to us, we are to be merciful to others. Without mercy we cannot be like him.
Mercy is the ability to have compassion because we consider others as important as ourselves. Mercy is rooted in love, even for those who seem to be unlovable or who seek to do us harm. Mercy is the ability to hurt with those who are hurting or to weep with those who weep because we feel their pain as if it were our own.
Heavenly Father I am thankful for your great love which motivates your love toward me in my helpless condition. I realize that my eternal destiny is in your hands and that I don’t deserve to ever be with you or in your presence. Yet, you have provided a way for me to have my sins forgiven and to be counted righteous in your eyes. As I seek to be like you, fill my heart with your love so I will have compassion and mercy on others and be willing to forgive them, even when I don’t feel they deserve to be forgiven. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
