Daily Devotional: Psalms 19:1-6

Ps 19:1-6

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, 5 which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. 6 It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.

Col 1:13-18

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

In another Psalm we are told that only a fool would say there is no God. The world in foolishness ignores the clear evidence of a creator and mocks the one who gave them their existence and life. In doing so, they elevate themselves to the position of god and in their arrogance, claim for themselves power they do not have.

Just as one may have all kinds of knowledge, if it does not begin with a fear of the God who made us, it is foolishness and is useless. Knowledge puffs up and brings arrogance instead of leading us to God. Too often, the more one knows, the less he or she truly understands what life is really about. Life is about serving God.

The death of Jesus on a cross, in what seems antiquity, is for many a mockery and a scorn, with no relevance to our world today. Yet, this event and his resurrection from the tomb three days later is the central event of all the ages. While it may seem foolishness, it is indeed the very event that can change our lives and the world around us. When accepted by faith, it gives peace and eternal life.

O Lord God, creator of all things, I thank you for your mighty wisdom and your infinite power that is shown to me in all of your creation. Thank you for parents who loved you and taught me to seek you and to want to be like you. Thank you for Jesus who died for me but lives with you and is seated at your right hand in the heavenlies today. Increase my faith so I will allow your word to sink in my heart and allow your Spirit to mold me into your likeness. Use me to encourage, teach and help others as you see best. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
