Daily Devotional: Psalms 32:6-11
Ps 32:6-11
6 Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him. 7 You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. 9 Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you. 10 Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD's unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him. 11 Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!
1 John 2:3-6
3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
We live in a society that promotes selfishness and an attitude that somehow, we are owed a good life by society. This is seen in the practice of participation awards and trophies for all the kids on a team. Sports are played without keeping score so all the kids feel equal and none are offended. To excel is not rewarded and to put forth our best efforts are discouraged. Along with this is the lack of teaching of respect for authority which leads to disdain for submission and obedience.
God’s word is filled with both submission and obedience. Every relationship in which we find ourselves is regulated with both of these. Positions of authority are given for our relationship with the government, the home, the church and even with our neighbors.
The word of God fully equips us for every good work.
Our first level of authority is God. He is supreme. He has given all authority to Christ and we are to follow his teaching and his example. Jesus gave authority to the apostles (and other inspired writers) who have given us his word. God’s grace and our faith both demand submission and obedience to God and to his word.
Thank you God, for revealing your will to us in your word. Thank you for giving me a light to follow and a path that leads me home to you. As I study your word, give me wisdom to understand and a willingness to submit to you and obey your word. Thank you for the beauty of nature. As I look at your sunset, the landscape of trees, the mountains or the ocean waves, I stand in awe at the beauty of it all and your demonstration of wisdom and power. Give your healing and your peace to those taking treatments for physical diseases. I pray in the name of Jesus.
