Daily Devotional: Psalms 40:6-10

Ps 40:6-10

6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. 7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come--it is written about me in the scroll. 8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." 9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly.

2 Tim 4:2-5

2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

In the previous chapter Paul has said that all scripture is God-breathed and is able to make us wise unto salvation. Then he tells Timothy to preach this word so others can be saved too. It is necessary for us to study God’s word, to feed on his spiritual food so we can grow into his likeness. We cannot live what we do not know. God has prepared good works for his children to be engaged in doing.

But we are to also share the gospel with others. This is not just the job of a few “missionaries” in some far-off land or even the preacher at home. We all are under the charge of Jesus when he said to proclaim the gospel to all mankind, wherever they may be. While our faith must be our own, we must share it too.

The Psalm above is quoted in reference to Jesus who came to do the will of his father here on earth. It is said that the law of God was written in his heart. There are some who attempt to write the Bible from time to time. This is good but what is even better is when we write it in our hearts. In doing this, it becomes a part of us, our thinking, our motives and our attitudes so that we do his will in all things.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for the revelation of your will in your written word. Thank you for giving your Son who demonstrated it to us in his life. Help me have the willingness to be used for others, even as he was given for my salvation and that of the whole world. As you wrote your commandments on stone for Moses and Israel, write your will in my heart every day. Give me faith to trust you in all things – to really trust you so I don’t second guess or try to make excuses to do things my own way. Forgive me when I fail. I pray in the name of Jesus.
