Daily Devotional: Psalms 45:1-6
Ps 45:1-6
1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer. 2 You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever. 3 Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. 4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds. 5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king's enemies; let the nations fall beneath your feet. 6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
Col 1:13-17
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
The promise was made by God to David that he would have descendants on his throne forever. It would be through his lineage that the eternal kingdom of God’s people would be ruled and that an eternal ruler would rule in justice and in mercy as the very Son of God. This promise was made to him because he was a man after God’s own heart and had ruled faithfully over Israel.
He had no way of knowing that this kingdom would be a spiritual kingdom and not one of a physical nature. This same mistake plagued the people of Israel in the days of Jesus, even his own disciples. And still today many are looking for Jesus to come and reign over an earthly kingdom which will never exist.
Jesus is King over God’s people now. He is over all rule and authority now. We are already in the kingdom of the Son, in fact, we are the kingdom. The church of the living God is made up of the people of God, citizens in his kingdom. Jesus is King!
Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your wisdom in establishing your kingdom on earth in a way that includes people from all nations. Never let me forget that Jesus is my King and that I must obey him in all things. As I prepare for the eternal home you have made ready, mold me into your image with a heart like David and like Jesus who sought to always do your will. Forgive me when I sin and open my eyes to see the error and have a penitent heart. Be with your people that we may show your love to the world and be faithful to Jesus as King. In his name I pray.
