Daily Devotional: Psalms 47:6-9
Ps 47:6-9
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. 7 For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. 8 God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. 9 The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.
1 Peter 4:8-10
8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.
What a blessing to be a child of God and to be able to serve him! We think of serving God and we think of church. While the fellowship of saints is God’s idea and it is part of serving him, we also serve him the other days of each week. He is to be served in the way we treat others at home, at work or at school. Serving him is what we do as good neighbors. When we help someone in need or we visit one who is unable to leave their homes, we are giving that cup of cold water in the name of Jesus. A kind word or a pat on the back can go a long way in serving.
The more we do what is right and follow the will of God, the more we will find joy, peace and happiness. The more we learn to give of ourselves to lift others up or to just make their lives better, not for what we get out of it but for what we can give, the more we will rejoice in the Lord. It is more blessed to give than receive.
But doing what is right keeps us out of trouble and away from many problems. It does not mean we will never suffer for doing right – because we will. It means that in doing right we can know we are letting our lights shine and others will see our good works and glorify the Father in heaven. We will be reflecting the light of Jesus in all we do and say and in so doing, we make it attractive for others to want to come to him and serve him. There is no testimony of our faith that is greater than a sincere servant heart, motivated by our love for Jesus and for others all around us. There is no light that shines as brightly as the love of God in us.
Heavenly Father fill me with your Spirit so I will shine your love to others. Open my eyes to see opportunities to serve and then give me strength to use each of them to your glory. I am so thankful for the love you have shown me in more ways than I can count. Thank you for the material things you have put into my life and I ask you to keep me from being greedy or selfish. Thank you for my physical family and the joy they give to me. Thank you for your spiritual family and the great blessing they are to me. Thank you for Jesus my Lord, in whose name I pray.
