Daily Devotional: Psalms 50:7-15

Ps 50:7-15

7 "Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you: I am God, your God. 8 I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, which are ever before me. 9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? 14 Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

Col 1:15-18

16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

What can you and I give the God of heaven and earth that will mean anything to him? He made it all and controls all things. Yet, the one thing we can give is the devotion of our hearts to him. We can give him praise but that is meaningless if it does not come from our heart. We can give great sums of money to the church or to help the poor but without love it is like making a noise but not music.

What God cannot take with his power is the genuine worship that comes from our devotion to him and our love that imitates him. This is why Jesus said the first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, all of our soul and all of our mind. He then added that the second greatest command is to love our neighbor as ourselves. Giving our life to Jesus is giving our all.

This entails obedience to the word of God. It means we must study the Bible to know what pleases him. We must spend time in devotion and prayer as we pray about our study and consider how to apply and live it in our daily lives.

O Lord God give me a devoted heart and wisdom to understand how to live for you in every way. Fill my heart with your love so I will become more like you in all I do and say. Help me be willing to share what you have given me and with a heart of cheer to want to help others. Forgive me when I fail and use me in your service as I seek to teach and encourage others. Be with those who are struggling with sickness, getting over surgeries, those who are hungry because of drought and those suffering from floods. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
