Daily Devotional: Psalms 57:1-5

Ps 57:1-5

1 Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. 2 I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills his purpose for me. 3 He sends from heaven and saves me, rebuking those who hotly pursue me; Selah God sends his love and his faithfulness. 4 I am in the midst of lions; I lie among ravenous beasts--men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.

1 Thess 3:11-13

12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

Who is this God that we serve? He is the God of glory! He is the Almighty God who created all things and maintains the world in which we live. His great love is boundless, even on those who are his enemies and who blaspheme his name. He is the source of all good things in life. He is faithful to care for his own.

Jesus is the promised Messiah, the only one who can (and has) defeated the evil one and his power. The power of Satan is sin and the power of sin is death but our Lord has overcome both when he died on the cross and came out of the tomb to live forever. Jesus is our Savior, our High Priest, our intercessor and our brother.

Hallelujah! What a Savior! We can awake every new day with purpose to live, with meaning to our lives because in him we have eternal life. No matter what we face in life with all of its troubles, we can live in joy because he has overcome. If some turn against us or malign us, we have the assurance that he will never leave us or forsake us and nothing on earth can take his love from us in Jesus.

Heavenly Father keep me from letting the things of this world sidetrack me from serving you, all of the problems, the pain and suffering or the entertainment and pleasures or the possessions I call my own. Give me a devoted heart and a pure heart toward you and your will. Remind me that this life is temporary and that I am living for eternity, not just for now and for this world. There are so many in my life who are facing cancer and I ask you to give them healing where it is your will. Give them your strength and your peace. Lord, the state of affairs in our nation weighs heavily on my mind and I ask you to give us leaders who will look to you and your wisdom so we can live quiet and peaceful lives. Give us leaders and judges that will uphold your word, your standard of morality and your definition of marriage and family. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
