Daily Devotional: Psalms 59:1-8
Ps 59:1-8
1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me. 2 Deliver me from evildoers and save me from bloodthirsty men. 3 See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, O LORD. 4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight! 5 O LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors. Selah 6 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. 7 See what they spew from their mouths--they spew out swords from their lips, and they say, "Who can hear us?" 8 But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you scoff at all those nations.
Eph 6:10-12
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
We all face trials in life. We can choose to dwell on these or we can focus on the many blessings we enjoy. This does not make the pain go away or restore the loved one we have lost. It does not restore the relationship that is broken. But it does build our faith in God who is protecting us. With his strength we can get through the worst that life has to offer. He is our strength and our shield.
Personally, I get tired of all the trite clichés that we hear about the love of God and how he will always be with us. If our hope is in these alone, we will say them and still wonder where his peace and help has gone. “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” But I must truly turn it all over to him and really learn to lean on Jesus to strengthen and sustain me. It is more than words.
When I trust him, I will obey his word. I study it, ponder it, pray for wisdom and then apply it in my life. Even when I don’t understand why he says what he says or it goes against the grain and my logic, I still trust him and seek to obey him.
Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your word and the wisdom it imparts to me and my life. Give me greater faith to turn my life (what I see as good or as bad) over to you and to follow your will. Keep me from harm and guide me so I will avoid temptations as much as possible. Be with your people all over the world and especially those who are being persecuted and those who are facing drought and even hunger. Bless, heal and give your peace to those who are suffering all kinds of diseases, both physical and emotional. I pray in Jesus name.
