Daily Devotional: Psalms 68:1-6

Ps 68:1-6

1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him. 2 As smoke is blown away by the wind, may you blow them away; as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God. 3 But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. 4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds--his name is the LORD--and rejoice before him. 5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. 6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

1 Thess 3:12-13

12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

When we read the Psalms, we see a few main points that stand out in many of them. God is God. He created the heavens and the earth. He made all that exists and is in control of all we see and know. He establishes the nations; he controls the rulers and he alone is sovereign. We also see that the Spirit of God is a part of creation as he spoke things into existence. From other places we know that the Son is the creator and sustainer of all things and all are made to his glory.

The way of the Lord is right. His way is derived from his infinite wisdom and is revealed to us in his word. But his voice is heard in the heavens as the thunder rolls and in the ocean as the waves crash into the beach. His wisdom is seen in the stars and the heavenly bodies but also in the smallest insects that live in their own little world. What we call “nature” is proof he is God and his wisdom prevails.

But one of the greatest lessons from the Psalms is that mankind has been made in his image and we are given an innate moral compass. But this compass is further guided by the revelation of his word and his will in the inspired scriptures. We can only find peace and joy when we come to Jesus and follow him as our Lord. In him we find meaning to life and a guide as to how we are to live. Praise the Lord!

Heavenly Father I am so very thankful for your love and for the revelation of your infinite wisdom. Thank you for showing me how to live in this life and how to live with you in eternity. No matter what pandemic terrorizes this world, I know you are in control and you will do what is best for your own. I ask that you help me look deep within my heart and see if I am really putting you first or if I have too much love of this world. Help me not be selfish but to consider others and their needs ahead of my own. Be with our nation. I pray in the name of Jesus.
