Daily Devotional: Psalms 77:1-9
Ps 77:1-9
1 I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. 2 When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands and my soul refused to be comforted. 3 I remembered you, O God, and I groaned; I mused, and my spirit grew faint. Selah 4 You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak. 5 I thought about the former days, the years of long ago; 6 I remembered my songs in the night. My heart mused and my spirit inquired: 7 "Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again? 8 Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time? 9 Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?" Selah
Heb 6:13-15
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, "I will surely bless you and give you many descendants." 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
When God speaks it comes to pass. His word is truth and truth always conforms to reality. Even though we may not see it at the time or we may not be able to confirm it with our limited abilities, the promises of God are real and will always come to pass. In chapter eleven of Hebrews we are told that Abraham did not see the fulfillment of the promises of God so it was after this life on earth that they all came to pass, but it happened just as God said it would happen.
As with the Psalmist, it is easy for us to become despondent when we do not see the working of God in our lives, when things are going badly or we are suffering. We begin to wonder if God hears our prayers and we wonder if he sees our plight or the things we are having to deal with in our daily lives. But God does see and he does hear! He is putting things together in such a way that he is working them for our good. Even though we may not see it or understand how, God knows what is best for us and will always be with us, protect us and strengthen us if we love him, trust him and do our best to obey him. What a blessing to serve a God who is on our side and has the power to control all things on our behalf. Praise the Lord!
Heavenly Father I am thankful for your wonderful love shown to me in more ways than I can possibly know. Thank you for hearing my prayers and for taking care of me when my path seems impossible and so lonely. Thank you for the Christian friends who lift me up along life’s way. Be with our nation that more of us will look to you and to your will for our lives. Give us leaders who trust you and who seek to rule by your precepts. Heal the divisions, give love in the place of hatred and peace among all mankind. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
