Daily Devotional: Psalms 77:10-15
Ps 77:10-15
10 Then I thought, "To this I will appeal: the years of the right hand of the Most High." 11 I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. 12 I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds. 13 Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God? 14 You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. 15 With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Col 3:1-4
1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
The Psalmist was facing some really tough times in his life. He was despondent because it seemed that God was not answering his prayers. Things did not seem to be getting any better but maybe, even worse. Where was God? Why was he not showing his power to deliver his own? Why were good people suffering?
Then he began to focus on God and his power, on his past actions and how he had helped his people so many times before. Instead of listening to those around him and the daily news of his day, he put his mind on the things above and all that God was capable of doing for him. In doing this, he was shifting his trust from himself and what he could do and putting his faith in God. God is great!
In our world today it is easy to get carried away with the daily (or even hourly) news and dwell on all that is wrong and the bad things that are happening. We are bombarded with Covid-19 news. We are covered up with the wrangling that is going on in Washington and in the state capitals. Add to this the murders and crime that is so prevalent and it is easy to get down and out and begin to doubt the goodness of God. Where is he? Why are these things allowed to happen? But God is in control and in his time all of this will be used for the good of his people.
O Lord God, giver and sustainer of life and all things that exist, I put my trust in you. Especially in times such as these when I do not know what the day will bring and things are so uncertain. I pray that in your time and in your way that you will ease the suffering and stop the pandemic. Meanwhile, give me greater faith to trust you and not live in fear, depression or doubt but to show others the joy and peace that only you can give. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory and fail to be all you want me to become. I pray in the name of Jesus.
