Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:9-16
Ps 78:9-16
9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle; 10 they did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his law. 11 They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. 12 He did miracles in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. 13 He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand firm like a wall. 14 He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night. 15 He split the rocks in the desert and gave them water as abundant as the seas; 16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.
Matt 16:8-11
8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
Promise – what a word! We say we will or that we will not and then how soon we find ourselves doing just the opposite. It may be a serious promise such as our wedding vows or it may be something that is less consequential such as what we will eat or not eat. But our word should be our bond. How quickly we forget!
God does not forget and he always keeps his word. When God has spoken, even if it is a prophecy to be fulfilled hundreds of years later, his word is sure and it will happen just as he has said. All of the promises made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are said to be fulfilled. The descendants of Abraham became a great nation and God gave them the Land of Canaan as their possession.
And then God sent Jesus, his Son as the Messiah to establish his eternal kingdom here on earth. This kingdom (also referred to as the church or the house of God) is just a foretaste of our eternal home in heaven. We physically are on earth but our citizenship (relationship) is in the heavenly places already with Jesus our Lord.
Heavenly Father give me peace of mind in the midst of the turmoil in this world as I put my trust in you. Give me strength to show my faith by the way I live, by what I say and all I do. Help me overcome every temptation as I remember the promise I made to you and to Jesus when I gave my life to you. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory. Be with your children in this pandemic that we will show our faith and your love to those around us. I pray in the name of Jesus my King.
