Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:25-31
Ps 78:25-31
25 Men ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat. 26 He let loose the east wind from the heavens and led forth the south wind by his power. 27 He rained meat down on them like dust, flying birds like sand on the seashore. 28 He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents. 29 They ate till they had more than enough, for he had given them what they craved. 30 But before they turned from the food they craved, even while it was still in their mouths, 31 God's anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.
1 Cor 10:6-10
6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry." 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did-and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test the Lord, as some of them did-and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did-and were killed by the destroying angel.
Some words and what they express just go together by the nature of what they are. Light means we can see but darkness means we cannot. Thanksgiving implies faith and results in joy and peace. Grumbling means discontent and distrust with the result being a lack of joy and peace. These are attitudes that we choose to have in our hearts and to show in our lives. Do not quench the Spirit.
James says that when we draw near to God, he will draw near to us. The more we seek to serve him and follow his will for our lives, the more we will trust him and be content with the hand we are dealt in life. This results in our being thankful for what we have because we know it all comes from him, by his grace.
Paul says that the more we ignore God and seek to live for ourselves, the farther we will be from him and he from us. In fact, Paul describes some so bad that God has given them up to do all the evil they want but with the destruction that it will bring on them because of their sin. It is our choice. Do not quench the Spirit.
Heavenly Father I am so thankful for all you do for me. But even in my gratitude I find myself complaining at times and not trusting you as I should. Forgive me and give me more strength and self-control to be like Jesus who entrusted himself to you without any reservation. Help me not grieve your Spirit or quench his power in my heart and my life. Use me to show your love, your peace and your joy as I seek to be like Jesus. Heal our troubled nation. Give us and especially our leaders wisdom to look to you for answers. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior.
