Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:40-48

Ps 78:40-48

40 How often they rebelled against him in the desert and grieved him in the wasteland! 41 Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy one of Israel. 42 They did not remember his power--the day he redeemed them from the oppressor, 43 the day he displayed his miraculous signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan. 44 He turned their rivers to blood; they could not drink from their streams. 45 He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them. 46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet. 48 He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning.

2 Tim 3:11-14

12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Who knows the power of God? Who can determine what he is capable of doing if he so chooses? We can only imagine what God can do! He brought the plagues on Egypt and destroyed the nation in so doing. He spoke, the heavens opened and it rained until the floods engulfed the entire world. Since he dreamed in his mind all that we know (plus much more) and then brought it into existence. Why or how can anyone ever doubt the power of God or spurn his word to us?

We are living in unprecedented times in our nation. It seems that wickedness and chaos are taking over every facet of our lives. There is evil and injustice all around us on every hand. Many in our governments that should be upholding what is right are the very ones who are at the heart of the evil. Citizens that should be respectful and appreciative of the freedoms we enjoy, use these very liberties to rage and destroy what belongs to others. And all of this on top of the virus.

But we measure things based on our experience – which covers a hundred years at the most. Things have been this bad before, even in our nation. But since our first allegiance is to the Kingdom of Christ, we live in hope and the assurance that God is in control. The answer lies only in changing hearts to follow Christ.

Heavenly Father I am so glad that you are in control. Even though I cannot see your plan or what will be tomorrow, I trust you to take care of me here on earth and one day take me to that better land where there will be no disease or civil unrest. I look forward to the day when everyone in that city has a heart filled with love. Fill me with your Spirit now so your love will overflow to all around me and help me share the good news of Jesus. I humbly pray in his Holy name.
