Daily Devotional: Psalms 90:7-12
Ps 90:7-12
7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 The length of our days is seventy years--or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Eph 5:15-19
15 Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
Time is an interesting phenomenon. We measure it, we use it, we waste it but we never actually see it, feel it or handle it in any way. Time is from God who is not constrained or measured by it. During the creation there was morning and there was evening and it was the first day. After seven of these days there was a week and thus time began. We read about months and years throughout Genesis.
How do we use our time? Do we make the most of every opportunity? When this day is gone, we will never be able to recall it or re-do it. Because of time, when we have said something it is gone from our lips that moment and it can never be un-said and the hurt is done or the good has blessed someone.
We need to use the time and the opportunities that God gives us in a way that will glorify him and honor his holy name. We do this when we take time to study his word and when we commune with him in prayer. We have opportunities to help others and to encourage those who are struggling. Often, we have moments to listen to what others are saying and to feel what they are feeling.
But we also need to rest. Jesus took his disciples away from the crowd and told them to rest. It is not a waste of time to take a needed vacation or to enjoy some recreation or sit down after work and rest a while. We need it in many ways.
Heavenly Father help me make the most of my time and use each opportunity to do good, to study your word and teach it. Help me use every moment of my life to show your love to those around me. What a blessing it is to be able to praise you and offer thanksgiving to you! You are an awesome God and I owe you my all. Use me and what you have given me to help others and never be selfish. Give me the wisdom to reach those who have never given their lives to Christ. I ask you to be with the leaders of our nation and guide them. I pray in the name of Jesus.
