Daily Devotional: Psalms 94:20-23

Ps 94:20-23

20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you--one that brings on misery by its decrees? 21 They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. 22 But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. 23 He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them.

Matt 16:1, 5-8, 11-12

1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. 5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread." 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 11 How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Politics and religion make for strange bed fellows. It was true in the days of Jesus and it is true today. Satan does not care who he uses for his purpose but will join those who strongly oppose each other to fight his (and their) common enemy, and that enemy is Jesus. There is and always has been a concerted effort to deceive the minds of people to fight against that which is right and godly.

The only way to keep from being deceived is to have knowledge and to think for ourselves. In the days of Jesus it was the Pharisees and Sadducees who told the people how and what to think. They blindly followed. When the people acted on their own, we see the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. But less than a week later, these same people were crying out to Pilate to crucify our Lord. This is why we are warned so often in scripture to not be deceived. Study your Bible and think as you study. No person has the right to dictate what you believe, only God.

Heavenly Father help me devote myself to your word more and help me learn what I am reading. Give me wisdom to understand and apply it in my life. As I consult others for learning, help me think and reason and measure their teaching only by your word. Be with our country as we see a concerted effort to promote all kinds of ungodliness, hatred and evil and be merciful to us. I pray that your children will wake up and do their part to teach your truth and oppose all evil. Use me to do my part in reaching the lost. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
