Daily Devotional: Psalms 109:26-31

Ps 109:26-31

26 Help me, O LORD my God; save me in accordance with your love. 27 Let them know that it is your hand, that you, O LORD, have done it. 28 They may curse, but you will bless; when they attack they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. 29 My accusers will be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. 30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng I will praise him. 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him.

2 Cor 1:7-10

7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. 8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. 9 Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

In the verses prior to these, Paul says that we comfort each other with comfort we get from the God of all comforts. There is no one who can give peace to us better than the God of peace. It is in trusting him as God and knowing that he has both the wisdom to know what needs to be done and the also the power to make it happen that we find true peace and comfort in our world today.

Death and the fear of death is the worst weapon that Satan has to use against us as the people of God. Death hurts those who are left. Death brings on so many problems and magnifies our troubles. The fear of death is ever looming in the back of our minds because we do not know what to expect and we do not want to leave this world or the many people that we know and have come to love.

So we often say that the worst that can happen is that we die. But for the child of God, this is the best that can happen to us. Paul had been given a glimpse of the eternal world and he said for him to die would be gain. On another occasion he said that the worst that could happen to him now, in this life would not even come close to the wonderful glory of that eternal home with God.

Heavenly Father I am thankful that you have given us word pictures of that home in glory. I know my mind cannot comprehend the beauty or the awesomeness of being in your presence but you have revealed enough for me to imagine what it will be like to see you in your radiance. Help me never loose sight of Jesus or that eternal home. As I live for you each day, I know that too often I say and do things that I should not so I need your continued forgiveness. Help me be more like you and show your love to all those around me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
