Daily Devotional: Psalms 110:1-7

Ps 110:1-7

1 The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." 2 The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion; you will rule in the midst of your enemies. 3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn you will receive the dew of your youth. 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

Heb 6:18-20

18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

In the Old Testament, Moses represented God to mankind (especially to Israel) and Aaron (along with his descendants) represented man to God. The High Priest who followed in line would be the oldest male descendant of Aaron. After David, the King of Israel (later Judah) was his child in line also. These were determined by their linage and not any other qualifications. This allowed for order but also some very corrupt people to be both High Priest and also to be King.

Melchizedek was a High Priest to God because God appointed him as such. It was not because of his lineage because he pre-dated Aaron and lived in the time of Abraham. But Melchizedek was also the King of Salem (or King of Peace). He was a type of the King of Salem (later known as Jerusalem) and the High Priest who would follow many years later, Jesus of Nazareth, the promised Messiah.

Jesus is our High Priest, our King and also our law giver. While he is a descendant of David and rightly inherits his throne, he is High Priest because of an oath by God and he is law giver because he is the Son of God and has all authority.

Heavenly Father it is such a blessing and a joy to be in your kingdom and to know that Jesus is my king, my High priest but also my friend. As my brother in the flesh who lived on earth, he understands all that I face in life. Thank you for your divine plan to provide a way for me to have that eternal home in glory. Thank you for the freedoms I enjoy in the USA and I ask you to be with our leaders and give them your wisdom. Guide our elections. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
