Daily Devotional: Psalms 111:1-5

Ps 111:1-5

1 Praise the LORD. I will extol the LORD with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. 2 Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them. 3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate. 5 He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.

Matt 6:19-21

19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We are living in a time when worry and fear are paramount in the hearts of so many people, even among Christians. Measure how much time is spent in the day either watching news about our troubles or talking with others about it and add to that the time we spend just contemplating it and measure that against how much time is spent reading, studying and thinking about God’s word.

If we feed our minds with all the hype about the virus or the social unrest or the corruption among our political leaders, we will actually consume ourselves with all of it. Paul lived in a time when the government was about as corrupt as it has ever been. Every form of sin was rampant in the Roman Empire. Idol worship included every imaginable kind of sexual immorality. Babies were killed if the parents felt they were the wrong gender or if they had any physical deformities or if they just did not need another mouth to feed. It was a terrible world indeed.

Yet, in the midst of this and while writing from a prison dungeon, he said we are to rejoice always in the Lord! As if this were not enough, he repeated it: Again I say, rejoice in the Lord! He then tells us to fill our minds with things that are right and good and wholesome and honest and lovely. Then the God of peace will be with us and we will have the peace that is beyond comprehension.

Heavenly Father help me dwell on your word and on things that are honest and lovely. Help me focus on Jesus and on things above, where he is seated at your right hand. Increase my faith so I will remember you are in control and that this world is not my home. Remind me that no matter how much stuff or things I seem to possess, they will not give me security or peace of mind. I ask you to stop the virus in your own time. Give wisdom to the leaders of our land and convict them so they will recognize you as the only Supreme God. Guide our elections to give a land of peace where your love abounds. I pray in the name of Jesus.
