Daily Devotional: Psalms 116:8-14
Ps 116:8-14
8 For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, 9 that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living. 10 I believed; therefore I said, "I am greatly afflicted." 11 And in my dismay, I said, "All men are liars." 12 How can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me? 13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. 14 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.
1 Tim 6:6-9
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
God knows best! Since the Garden, the devil has been trying to convince mankind that when we follow God, we are wasting our time. “If you want to have fun; get drunk or use drugs. Immorality is the how we find contentment. Fulfilment is only found in accumulating money and material things.” These are all lies of the devil and these will take away our joy, our peace and our contentment.
One of the leading causes of death among young people and rapidly growing among those who are older is suicide. I read a few years back that it is the leading cause of death among former pro athletes. The reasons are many but at the top of the list is feeling guilty, feeling useless, with no purpose in life or the futility of running the “rat race” and trying to get ahead in a world that is against us.
The Bible explains this and says that the whole purpose of mankind is to fear God as God and then follow him and his will for us. In Christ, our sins are forgiven, they are all gone! In him we find meaning to life as we serve others. We live with true contentment because we know that this world is passing away and our treasures are being reserved in heaven. We forever have the Spirit in us to help us.
Heavenly Father it is so wonderful to be your child and to know that my sins are all gone, taken away by the blood of Jesus. It is so peaceful, even in the midst of all the commotion around me to know that you are watching over me and that I have no reason to worry. Thank you for showing me the joy of serving others and using what you have given me to honor you and your name. Thank you for my family, both physical and spiritual family and all the joy they give me. Thank you for the USA and all of our freedoms and opportunities. I pray in Jesus name.
